Venice Fantasies, de Luxe By Peter Blake

Peter Blake's 'Venice Fantasies' encompasses his characteristic wry humour and unerring sense of the absurd in which can be found in all of his works. Fifty years after his first trip to the most magical of Italian cities, he made his return visit in 2007 as he was embarking on a series of affectionate and preposterous tributes to the city as reconfigured in his imagination. Peter Blake engages in a sort of time travel and unlikely alliances that marked his celebrate cover design for the Beatles LP Sgt Pepper's 'Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Each of the 21 images found in the book take a photographic view of Venice from the early 1900's. The city is invaded by penguins and engulfed in icebergs, which as a stage set with dance companies and as a camp site by scout troops but with its tranquillity shattered by plane crashes, overcrowded regattas, fishermen, motorboat racers and magic crowds. On the Piazza San Marco, citizens from ancient times rub shoulders at a café with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as well as American tourists enjoying a picnic.
